How to Install Kitchen Cabinets Properly: A Complete Guide

When installing cabinetry, the small details can make a big difference in the finished look. Fillers, side panels, and crown moldings should always be installed flush with the cabinet doors. This creates a clean, continuous appearance and helps the entire installation look intentional and professional.

Correct Installation

In the example on the left, the cabinet components are installed so that the fillers and surrounding panels align with the face of the cabinet doors. This creates a smooth, consistent line across the cabinetry.

The goal is for the finished surfaces to sit on the same plane as the cabinet doors. When everything is properly aligned, the cabinetry looks clean and seamless, with fewer distracting edges or recessed areas.

Incorrect Installation

The examples on the right show what happens when the installation is not flush with the cabinet doors.

In the first example, the upper cabinet doors are set back from the surrounding panel/filler, creating a noticeable step or ledge. In the second example, the side panel projects beyond the cabinet door, making the side of the cabinet appear uneven.

These details may seem minor, but they are highly visible once the installation is complete. They can make the cabinetry look unfinished and can also create inconsistent lines from one cabinet to the next.

The Takeaway

Always check the alignment of fillers, side panels, and crown molding against the cabinet doors before completing the installation. Keeping these elements flush creates a cleaner appearance, better visual consistency, and a more professional finished product.

Simple rule: If it surrounds the cabinet doors, it should align with the face of the doors.
